Henrik Schrat (1968, Greiz/Germany) works with various forms of visual story-telling. To do this, he likes to use popular stories, from fairy tales to the Starship
Enterprise, in order to use them as a metaphor for contemporary questions. This creates complex, ambiguous stories which are humorous, but, on second glance, can hit home. Besides forms close to illustrations and graphic novels, large-format wall images are a key segment of his work. The wall images are all created as silhouettes, quoting a historic but still contemporary form (e. g. Milch & Honig, Casino of the Jakob Kaiser Haus in the German Federal Parliament, 2004; Im Orbit des Mars ..., HMKV Dortmund, 2015).
Schrat tackles traditional craft techniques, image formats and their cultural origins and connotation in a similar way. This is reflected, for example, in his inlaid cycles, which were created in cooperation with Indian inlay craftsmen, and whose extremely slow creation, which cannot be reproduced, he considers to be subversive (e. g. the 92-piece work Outsourcing ( 2008 ), property of the Berlinische Galerie). In the cycle Orangerie bei Nacht ( 2016 ), Schrat also uses an Asian technique, brush painting on scrolls.
Henrik Schrat holds a Master from the Art College, Dresden, Germany in Stage Design and Painting (1998) and a Master of Fine Art Media, Slade School of Fine Art, London (2002). His work has been exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally and is part of numerous collections.
